Native to southern Mexico, the Monstera deliciosa, commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Plant or Fruit Salad Plant, are large jungle plants, popular for the holes in their leaves. They can be grown big or small making them the perfect indoor plants for both tiny apartments or large open-plan homes.
While these guys thrive indoors, they are happy to grow outdoors too. And when they with the right conditions (that is shade and space), they will spread themselves out and upwards and produce flowers that develop into edible fruit that is said to taste like a fruit salad!
Other names of these large beauties include:
- Swiss cheese plant
- Fruit salad plant
- Mexican breadfruit
- Split-leaf Philodendron
How to care:
-Thrives in bright to medium indirect light. Not suited for intense, direct sun but can be acclimated to withstand it.
-Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light (tip: Monsteras can benefit from filtered water or water left out overnight before using!)
-Normal room humidity will do, but prefers humid conditions if possible.
-Put them in a bigger pot to grow them even bigger with bright indoor light! Fertilize monthly to support the growth.
-Once these are very well grown and in a decent size of 170mm and the leaves have already developed the foliage and character- makes them so exciting for the recipient :)
